PALM DESERT, CA (May 1, 2017) - Thanks to a first round 5-under 67 Dan Sullivan has taken a one shot lead at the Southern California Mid-Amateur.
Playing at Ironwood Country Club's North Course Sullivan birdied seven-times while bogeying just twice during his first round. The 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur finalist from last year started his round on the 10th hole and he promptly birdied three straight holes to jump start his round. Following an 18th hole bogey, Sullivan hoped back aboard the birdie train carding circles on Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 before bogeying the 7th.
As impressive as the round for Sullivan was he will still have his work cut out for him. Three players; Robert Funk, Trae Cassell and Justin Hales will all begin the second round tied for second at 4-under with an additional four players sharing fifth at 3-under.
Overall 16 players were under-par or better on Monday meaning the race for the top spot is still wide open.
Defending champion Corby Segal is tied for 24th at 1-over.
The second round the 36-hole first day is currently underway with the round to follow on Tuesday.
