AUSTIN, TX (May 4, 2017) - Texas junior Doug Ghim didn't grow up with a country club to play at but that didn't stop him from becoming one of top of players in the country.
From searching for the cheapest greens fees to playing second hand golf balls found by his dad Jeff at the municipal golf courses they played, Ghim fought his way to the top.
"I would try and help [look] him sometimes but he would tell me no your job is to get better, you need to go play, you need to focus on your own game," Ghim said in a recent video on the Longhorn Network. "This is what I would need to do."
Since arriving in Austin in the fall of 2014 Ghim, who started playing golf when he was five, has been an impact player for the Longhorns. As a freshman he finished inside the top-10 three-times, including at the NCAA Championships where he tied for eighth.
During his sophomore season, a year that saw Texas finish as the national runner-ups, Ghim was even better recording seven top-eight finishes.
Now a junior Ghim has picked up six more top-10 finishes and his first collegiate victory at the UT Longhorn Shootout. During his Texas career Ghim has also earned a number of honors including twice being named to the All-Big 12 Team and the 2016 Arnold Palmer Cup team.
However, despite all the accolades and top finishes there is still one major team award that Ghim is in search of and this year he will have a chance to win the NCAA Championship in essentially his backyard. From Arlington Heights, IL, this years NCAA Championship is being played at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course in Sugar Grove, IL and it is just under an hour drive from Ghim's hometown.
