PALO ALTO, CA (May 15, 2017)--The theme of the day across the six NCAA Regional sites has been the home course advantage, with
LSU and
Texas taking advantage of playing on their home courses to build first-round leads.
So it was for Stanford, playing host to the NCAA Southwest Regional at Stanford Golf Course. Led by senior Maverick McNealy, the Cardinal posted five par-or-better scores on their home course to take a six-shot lead after round one.
McNealy recorded seven birdies in a round of five-under 65, tied for the individual lead with Brad Dalke of the University of Oklahoma. Franklin Huang (67), Isaiah Salinda (69), Brandon Wu (70) and Viraat Badhwar (70) all contributed to a nine-under-par round of 271 for the Cardinal.
Baylor University sits in second at three-under 277. The Bears were led by three players at 68: Matthew Perrine, Cooper Dossey and Hunter Shattuck.
A further shot back is BYU at 278, with North Florida at 279, Oklahoma at 280, and Pepperdine and Houston tied at 281.
Huang of Stanford, Patrick Fishburn and C.J. Lee of BYU, and individual David Kim representing UC Irvine all shot 57 to share third place behind McNealy and Dalke.
Collin Morikawa, the #2 ranked player in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Amateur Rankings, is in the field as an individual representing the Cal-Berkeley. Morikawa shot an even-par round of 70.
The low five teams and the low individual not on a qualifying team will qualify for the NCAA Championship, to be held at Rich Harvest Farms in Elk Grove, IL, May 26-31.
