ST. HELANA ISLAND, SC (May 24, 2017) - Weather limited the 66th South Carolina Open to just 36-holes but Tate Hoisington doesn't mind one bit. The amateur and former Armstrong State standout fired back-to-back 2-under 70s at Dataw Island Club's Cotton Dyke Course to finish 4-under and as the one-stroke winner over pro Peter Skirpstas.
Hoisington exploded out of the gates in his second and final round with a 4-under 32 front side that included five birdies and one bogey before holding on during the second nine despite dropped shots on two holes.
The second round for Hoisington began with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 and then after a 4th hole bogey he birdied the 6th, 7th and 9th holes.
Hoisington gave the Dataw Island maintenance staff kudos for their hard work making the wet course playable. (Bunkers needed to be pumped, hand-bailed, and raked multiple times in three days.)
“[The course] was fantastic. The greens were perfect, and the fairways and rough, surprisingly, weren’t that wet," said Hoisington.
When asked which hole was his favorite, Hoisington chose the scenic par-4 9th. Why? Because he birdied it both times.
PGA Apprentice Peter Skirpstas of Jacksonville CC finished alone in second place at 72-69=141 (-3). He earned first prize in the PGA Professional contest. Professional Ray Franz, amateur Johnson Holliday and amateur Matt Oquinn shared third at 2-under.
