Lupton Invitational: Todd Burgan ties Clay Homan for lead

OOLTEWAH, TN (May 27, 2017) - With a fine 2-under 70 at the famously difficult Honors Course, Todd Burgan has tied first round leader Clay Homan for the lead at the Lupton Invitational.
Coming off a first round 74, Burgan claimed his share of the lead by tying William Mitchell of Roswell, Georgia for the low round of the day under more difficult conditions. The Knoxville area resident is a veteran of multiple USGA Mid-Amateur championships and has represented Tennessee at the USGA State Team.
Homan, the reigning Mississippi State Amateur champion, was one of only two players under par in the first round, when he posted a 4-under 68. Today the recently retired head golf coach of Mississippi State came back to earth with a 76. But despite the slip he did not lose a share of the lead.
That's because even par golf is really good at the Pete Dye design that has hosted more than it's fair share of amateur golf tournaments, including the U.S. Junior Amateur and the Southern Amateur in recent years.
Members of The Honors Course understand the course's mission to give back to the amateur game, and are very accommodating of the days of play lost by running these events. We love that.
Sunday's final round tee times have been moved up and both the 1st and 10th tees will be used to start players. We hope they get it in!
