SCOTTSDALE, AZ (June 14, 2017) – Quade Cummins of Weatherford, OK shot a seven-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the 102nd Southwestern Amateur Golf Tournament at the Desert Mountain Club.

This is the fourth straight year that the Southwestern Amateur has been held at Desert Mountain, which has six Jack Nicklaus designed courses. The Geronimo and Cochise Courses are being used for this year's event, with half of the field playing each course over the first two days.

Cummins, who was a redshirt freshman this past season for the national champion University of Oklahoma Sooners, had a bogey-free seven birdie round to tie the competitive course record at the Geronimo Course. He is two strokes ahead of Chase Hanna of Kansas City, KS who just finished his college career at the University of Kansas. Hanna shot a five-under 65 on the Cochise Course.

Cummins was the low man at the Geronimo Course by four shots, and he described his round as "very steady as I hit all 14 fairways and missed only two greens. It really was a very solid round of golf, on a very difficult golf course. I hope I can go out and to the same thing tomorrow.”

Jamie Cheatham of Rancho Santa Fe, CA is in solo third after a four-under 66 at the Cochise Course. Seven players are tied for fourth at three-under-par 67, including three players with local ties: Jino Sohn, a junior at Arizona State University, Jake Chanen of Phoenix and Grand Canyon University, and Briggs Duce of Sierra Vista, Ariz.

The shot of the day came from Kyle Suppa of Honolulu who aced the 193-yard seventh hole on the Geronimo Course.

The tournament continues tomorrow morning with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. After the conclusion of the second round, the field will be cut to the low 60 and ties with the final 36 holes being played Friday and Saturday on the Cochise Course.
