SPARTANBURG, SC (June 17, 2017) - Julian Keur secured his spot in the championship match after defeating Stan Sill, 55, of Spartanburg 3-and-2. Keur wasted no time jumping out to an early advantage, making birdies on three of his first six holes to go four up. "I really feel that I got going early," said Keur. "I was consistent off the tee and converted a few really close shots which was nice." Sill made one final attempt to falter Keur's championship match hopes. A birdie on the par-4 seventh jump-started a run of three wins in four holes to cut Keur's lead to one up. Keur, a rising senior at University of Alabama-Birmingham, responded by claiming hole 13 with a birdie and hole 15 with par to stop the bleeding and seal the win. Tomorrow, Keur will face three-time South Carolina Amateur Champion
Todd White and looks to build off how he began his match with Sill. "I have to play like I did early on in my matches, limit my mistakes, and focus on hitting the middle of the green. We will see what happens after that."
Three-time champion (1991, 2004, 2010) Todd White advanced to his fifth SC Amateur Match Play championship after defeating Brady Hinkle, 17, of Lancaster 4-and-3. White carried his hot play from the morning round into the afternoon, recording three birdies on his first four holes to go three up. "I started off really well today," said White. "I have driven the ball really well all week and my distance control on my wedges has been great." While the pair even over the next 10 holes, White credited his match play experience to helping him come out on top. "Whenever I got two up, that is when I started to put pressure on [Hinkle] and forced him to make birdies," said White. "Maybe those 29 years have added a little maturity to know when to take chances."
Quarterfinal Matches
Julian Keur, 21, of Summerville knocked off Parker Dudley, 26, of John's Island 3-and-2. Keur jumped out to an early lead with a birdie on the par-4 first. Then, Dudley responded by winning No. 3 and No. 4 to go one up. Dudley remained one up through the pairs' first eight holes, but Keur claimed the ninth hole with a birdie to make the match all square. From there, Keur would win four of the next five holes, including the final three to seal the match.
Medalist Todd White, 49, of Spartanburg defeated Andrew Orischak, 18, of Hilton Head 6-and-4. Orischak was one up after making birdie on the par-4 fifth, but could not continue his momentum. A birdie by White on the par-5 sixth kick-started a run of four birdies over his next nine and a hole out for eagle on the par-4 10th that helped him pull away.
