JUPITER, FL (June 24, 2017) -
Cristian DiMarco separated himself by two shots over
Henry Westmoreland during the third round of the 100th Amateur Championship. On a hot and humid summer day in Jupiter, those making the top 70 and ties cut went back to The Bear's Club to test their skills once again on Jack Nicklaus's golf course. After a long and grueling day, it is Cristian DiMarco who claims the top spot on the leaderboard heading into the home stretch and final round.
DiMarco started the third round off with his first bogey since the 12th hole of the first round, but bounced back with a birdie on the fourth hole to bring himself back to even par for the day. After an unusual double bogey, DiMarco quickly covered the blemish on his scorecard with two birdies to go out with an even-par 36. Getting off to a hot start on the back nine, Cristian would eagle the 10th hole and birdie the 12th to reach nine-under par. However, with some missed putts coming in, DiMarco would go on to bogey both the 13th and 18th holes to finish the third round with a one-under par 71. DiMarco is seven-under par for the tournament and holds a two-shot lead over Henry Westmoreland heading into the final round.
Westmoreland of Wacissa also shot one-under par today and finished the third round five-under par for the tournament. Starting off with a bogey at the first, Westmoreland carded six consecutive pars before rolling in his first birdie of the day on the eighth hole. Making the turn at even-par, Westmoreland birdied the first two holes of the back nine to put himself, at the time, two shots back of DiMarco. A birdie at the 15th, along with two late bogeys made Westmoreland finish the third round with a one-under par round of 71. Sitting two shots off the lead going into the final round, Westmoreland will tee it up with DiMarco in the final pairing of the day off the first tee.
The low round of the day came from 2014 State Amateur Champion, Gabriel Lench. With a round that consisted of five birdies and no bogeys, Lench was able to significantly move up the leaderboard on day three with a five-under par round of 67. The 100th Amateur had its third hole-in-one of the championship and second at The Bear's Club this week. Today, it was Dillon Woods who aced the seventh hole with an eight-iron. Using the hole-in-one as momentum, Woods moved into a tie for fourth place with a four-under par round of 68.
The final round of the 100th Amateur Championship will begin at 8 A.M. with tee times starting on the 1st and 10th tees. We encourage media and spectators to come out and watch the best amateur golfers in the state battle it out at The Bear's Club in hopes of hoisting the trophy tomorrow afternoon.
ROUND TWO RECAP
On another picturesque day in Jupiter, Florida's best amateur golfers took on The Bear's Club and Lost Tree Club in hopes of making the 36-hole cut at the 100th Amateur Championship. After the second round, it is University of South Florida senior Cristian DiMarco and Auburn University commit Brandon Mancheno who led the field.
Both playing at Lost Tree Club this morning, DiMarco and Mancheno shot their second consecutive under par round to sit atop the leaderboard at six-under par. Mancheno proved he could not only handle The Bear's Club but also Lost Tree Club. Starting out strong, Mancheno birdied two of his first three holes of the day before posting six consecutive pars to make the turn at two-under par. The 2015 Junior Player of the Year then went on to birdie the 11th and 13th holes before making his only bogey of the day on the par-four 16th hole. Finishing up with a birdie at the last, Mancheno posted a four-under par round of 68 to propel him to the top of the leaderboard. "I'm hitting the ball really well, and I'm putting the best I have in a long time," Mancheno said.
Joining Mancheno in first place heading into the weekend is Cristian DiMarco. Playing at Lost Tree Club, DiMarco followed up his impressive four-under par 68 at The Bear's Club yesterday with a bogey-free, two-under par 70. After steadily starting off with eight pars, DiMarco birdied the par-5 18th hole to go out in one-under par. Staying patient, DiMarco then went on to par the first six holes on the back nine before adding another birdie to his round on the seventh. He posted 16 pars and two birdies for a round of 70. "It was kind of a grind the first nine holes. I made a couple mid-range putts including a 20-foot par putt on 17 before birdieing the 18th to right the shift," DiMarco said. After only missing one fairway over the first 36 holes of competition, DiMarco hopes to keep the same game plan going into the weekend.
After the opening 36 holes of the 100th Amateur Championship, the field was cut to the low 70 players and ties. Therefore, players shooting a two-day total of 11-over par moved on to the weekend where competitors will play the final two rounds of the Championship at The Bear's Club. Of the five past State Amateur champions playing in the field this week, four made the cut, including defending champion, Jacob Huizinga.
The third round of the 100th Amateur Championship will begin tomorrow morning with tee times starting at 8:00 A.M. off of the 1st and 10th tees.
