PASADENA, CA (July 15, 2017) - For the fifth time since 2007 and the second time in the last three years
Tim Hogarth has won the Pasadena City Championship hosted by Brookside Golf Club. Hogarth finished the weekend 7-under and as the three-stroke winner over Seung Yub Baek (-4).
Three-strokes back after a day one 1-under 71, Hogarth moved in front on Saturday with the round of the tournament, a 6-under 66.
Saturday's round for Hogarth started with a mundane par but the 1996 U.S. Public Links winner soon found his grove with birdies on the next five holes to quickly reach 6-under for the tournament. Hogarth did cool off a bit with 7th and 8th hole bogeys before rediscovering his form on the homeward nine with birdies on Nos. 11, 14, and 15.
Now playing from the lead Hogarth closed with an even-par 72 that included three birdies and three bogeys. The now "most-decorated Pasadena City champ" told us that this win wasn't as easy as some of his previous ones.
"I still hit it as long as I used to," said Hogarth. "But it's hard to keep up with 20-year-olds."
The turning point of the final round might have been the 11th hole. With both of challengers in the final group looking at birdie on the par 5, Hogarth found a wall of trees after missing the fairway badly.
"I think they both thought I was going to make bogey or double there," said Hogarth. "I drove it in trouble, and couldn't punch out the first try, and when I finally got out I had 235 yards left."
Hogarth dug deep and hit his fourth shot to 6 feet and holed the putt for par. The veteran showing the young guys he wasn't going anywhere. And being aware of his place in the tournament's history, Hogarth kept doing what he needed to do, holing several long par putts down the stretch.
"I knew that Bruce McCormick, who did so much for amateur golf in California, also had four titles," said Hogarth. "So it was really nice to win this one."
The victory for Hogarth was his first AmateurGolf.com Ranking win of the season after he claimed the Kelly Cup and Southern California Match Play titles in 2016.
Kyle Haas was the final player to finish under-par at 2-under in third while Chung Cheng Wang and Tongun Losarah Lako shared fourth at even-par. 2014 and 2016 champion Dan Sullivan shared sixth with Eddie Cho following a 1-over showing.
