BRANDON, SD (August 13, 2017) - Tom Vining of Elmwood Golf Club shot a final-round five-under 66 to pull away from Arron Lickteig of Fox Run Golf Club and win the 47th South Dakota Amateur at Brandon Golf Course.
Playing in the final grouping, Vining, the 2015 champion, and Lickteig, the defending champion who won by six shots at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club last year, would go on to take the top two spots, with Vining coming out on top by two shots.
Going into the final round, it was Andrew Welk of Moccasin Creek Golf Club who had the lead, by one shot over Lickteig and two over Vining. But Vining, a rising junior at the University of South Dakota, took control of the tournament with a stretch of five birdies in six hole starting at the 4th to turn in four-under 32.
Lickteig, a rising senior at the University of Wyoming, tried to make it interesting on the back nine, making three birdies in the last six holes including the last two, but Vining responded with birdies at 16 and 17 to maintain his cushion all the way to the clubhouse. His closing 66 gave him a nine-under 204 total. Lickteig (69) finished at seven-under 206.
Welk closed with an even-par 71 to finish solo third at six-under 207.
