TOLEDO, OH (September 19, 2017) — Saint Mary's was named Inverness Intercollegiate champions on Tuesday at The Inverness Club after heavy rain and lightning canceled the final round.
The Gaels finished the tournament with a 36-hole total of 10 under par. Showing how important it is to grab the lead when the weather looks threatening, their second-round 6-under 278 put them a single shot ahead of Michigan State, and ultimately gave them the win.
UCLA and Michigan finished tied third at 3-under, with Washington solo fifth at one over par.
Saint Mary's was led by senior Pavan Sagoo, who recorded rounds of 69-68 to finished tied for fourth individually at 5 under par.
Perry Cohen (69-71) and Ash Hakim (70-70) finished tied for 12th at 2-under. Second year player Blake Hathcoat (72-69) also tied for 15th. Connor Blick (76-72) finished tied for 54th.
It was the 22nd all-time team title for St. Mary's, and their first win since the WCC Championships in 2016.
Two players shared individual medalist honors. Kaleb Johnson of Michigan State shot 65-69 for an 8-under 134 total, tied with Nick Heinen of #1 ranked Oklahoma State (68-66).
Oklahoma State did not enter the tournament as a team, but played three individuals who all finished inside the top 12 of the tournament. The Cowboys were already in the Midwest and had just played the Olympia Fields/FIghting Illini Invitational where they finished third.
The Inverness Club was the site of four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, and one U.S. Amateur.
