IRVINE, CA (September 17, 2017) - Former Major League baseball pitcher
Shigetoshi Hasegawa won the Irvine City Championship in a playoff at Strawberry Farms Golf Club.
The 49-year-old Hasegawa shot rounds of 70-68 to get into a playoff with Chris Casey of La Quinta, and prevailed on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Casey shot the low round of the tournament, a 67, after opening with a 71.
Chris Cooper of Irvine was solo third after two straight rounds of 71, while Nicholas Choi (Beverly Hills, CA) and Jonathan Young (Cerritos, CA) tied for fifth at 145.
Hasegawa was a relief pitcher for the Anaheim Angels from 1997 to 2001, before joining the Seattle Mariners from 2002 to 2005. Before coming to the U.S., he played six years in Japan for the Orix BlueWave. Hasegawa played with all-time hits leader Ichiro Suzuki, both at Oriz and later with Seattle.
Hasegawa had been trending well in the Irvine City Amateur, finishing tied fourth in 2015 and solo third last year.
Earlier this summer, Hasegawa qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Riviera Country Club.
