WINTER HAVEN, FL (October 14, 2017) - Marc Dull continues to make himself right at home at the Florida Mid-Amateur Stroke Play at The Country Club of Winter Haven.
The Winter Haven native extended his lead from two shots to six in Saturday's second round, shooting a four-birdie, two-bogey 70 to reach seven under par for the tournament. He is the only player in the field to post two under-par rounds.
All of Dull's closest pursuers coming into Saturday's round shot over par on the day. Donald Wolfe (69-74) Joe Alfieri (70-73) and Joseph Latowski (70-74) all lost ground to Dull, and of the four players who shot 71 on day one, only T.J. Shuart (71-72) was able to match par in the second round.
That gave Dull the opportunity to build his lead, and he did just that, shooting one under on the front nine and getting it to three under on the day before a bogey on 16 brought him back to seven under. His two-day total is 137.
Five players are tied for second, six shots back at one under: Shuart, Wolfe, Alfieri, Paul Tesori (72-71) and Tyler Shook (73-70), who matched Dull's low round of the day.
Three more players are at even par for the championship, and three more are at one over par, so if Dull were to come back to the field, it could be a very crowded leaderboard. More likely, it will take a very low round by one of the chasers to catch him.
Dull, Wolfe and Alfieri will tee off in the final group at 9:15am local (Eastern) time.
ROUND ONE RECAP
Playing in his hometown, Marc Dull opened the Florida Mid-Amateur Stroke Play at The Country Club of Winter Haven with a 5-under 67 to take a two-shot lead.
Just days removed from missing a playoff to get into match play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur by a stroke Dull put together an impressive round of golf that included six birdies and just a single bogey. The 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up did bogey his opening hole but birdies on Nos. 4, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 17 more than salvaged his round.
Donald Wolfe is in second place at 3-under following a 69 while Joseph Latowski, Ron Davis and two-time Florida Mid-Amateur winner Joe Alfieri are tied for third at 2-under. Alfieri began last years final round tied for the lead before watching Michael J. Connors run away with the title.
In all just 10 of the 113 players to complete their rounds on Friday turned in red figure scorecards.
