KISSIMMEE, FL (October 27, 2017) - A 2-over 74 proved to be more then enough for wire-to-wire Golfweek U.S. Super Senior National Championship winner John Armstrong.
Following consecutive rounds of even-par 72 at the Walt Disney World Golf Complex Palm Course Armstrong did just enough in the final round to finish 2-over and as the winner by three-strokes over Phil Pavoni (+5).
Armstrong, who won the 2017 SOS John Kline, had an interested final round. Early on it looked like he might runaway as he birdied the first two holes but a double-bogey on the 4th and four bogeys over the course of the next eight holes made things interesting.
However, Armstrong was able to regain control of the tournament with birdies on No. 13 and 17.
David Crocker and Pete McDade shared third at 6-over while Robert Hess, Jerry Young and Jim Rollefson shared fifth at 8-over.
LEGENDS DIVISION
In the Legends Division Garrett Garland and 36-hole pace setter Randolph Russell finished tied for first at 1-over. Russell started the day one shot in front of Garland and played solidly with a 1-over 73 only to see Garland, the first round leader even the tally with a final round level-par 72.
Both players had a chance to win the tournament outright on the 54th hole but Garland double-bogeyed the hole and Russell bogeyed it.
Garland struggled on the 18th hole playing it in 4-over during the three rounds, Russell was 2-over on the hole for the week.
George Washburn was one shot back in third at 2-over while Don Marsh and Jack Ramsey shared fourth at 5-over.
ROUND TWO RECAP
With a second consecutive even-par 72 John Armstrong remained atop the Golfweek U.S. Super Senior National Championship leaderboard.
During day two at the Walt Disney World Golf Complex Palm Course Armstrong birdied twice and bogeyed twice with his circles coming on Nos. 9 and 11 to maintain his advantage.
David Crocker held his ground with a level-par 72 and he is in second place at 2-over, Phil Pavoni is third at 3-over while Gary Kirwan and Robert Hess are sharing fourth at 4-over.
LEGENDS DIVISION
In the Legends Division the lead changed hands as Randolph Russell took over the lead. Russell with consecutive 72's is even-par through 36-holes and he will carry a one-stroke lead into the last day over first round leader Garrett Garland.
On Thursday Russell had a chance to carry a moderately comfortable lead into the final round but he slipped up with a double-bogey on No. 14 to drop back to even-par from 2-under. Overall Russell birdied four-times, bogeyed twice and double-bogeyed once during his round.
For Russell three of his four birdies came in a four hole span from Nos. 2-4.
