San Diego Cup: Pros Retain the Cup in a Tight Battle
Kyle Rector was among the amateur singles winners on Sunday
SAN DIEGO, CA (November 5, 2017) - With a narrow 2 point margin, the PGA Professionals defended the 46th annual San Diego Cup hosted by the Rancho Bernardo Inn.
The Amateurs fought hard to take the Ryder Cup-style matches to the final hole of the singles matches on Sunday. PGA Professionals Bruce Nakamura and Grant Strobel, playing in the final group of singles matches, both won the par four ninth hole to retain the Cup. Nakamura hit his 110-yard approach shot to three feet for a tap-in birdie to close out the win for the Professionals.
This win marks the fourth consecutive win for the PGA Professionals against the San Diego County Amateurs. The Professionals lead the series 23-21-2.
A notable performance on the Professional side during the singles matches came from Tim Parun. Parun was four down through seven holes and proceeded to make four birdies in a row to eventually win his singles match.
On the Amateur team, Aaron Rinehart had an outstanding final day closing out his opponent 6&5. Kyle Rector made four birdies in a row to close out his singles match early 8&7. Rector was five under for the 11 holes he played in the match.
The matches were close throughout. The professionals took a 3.5-2.5 lead after the Saturday session, which was a Pinehurst format. They extended their lead to two points after the Sunday morning Better Ball session, setting the stage for the afternoon singles matches, which were halved 6-6 for a 13-11 final score.
