SEASIDE, CA (January 7, 2018) - Pavan Sagoo likes the Monterey Peninsula.

The England-born senior at St. Mary's won his second tournament in as many months in the Monterey area, capturing the 2nd annual McClure Cup at Bayonet-Blackhorse Golf in Seaside.

For Sagoo, his weekend in Seaside turned out to be very similar to his weekend last month at the AmateurGolf.com Charistmas Classic, where he won at Del Monte Golf Club in Monterey.

At Del Monte, Sagoo shot 65-68 to set a tournament scoring record and win by six shots. At BBH, he shot 69-68 to set a tournament scoring record (which to be fair was slightly easier in year two of the tournament) and win by four shots. But this win was harder to come by.

In round one, Sagoo overcame a couple of early bogeys to post a three-under 69, highlighted by an eagle two at the driveable par-four sixth. This put him in a three-way tie for second with Kevin Velo (Danville, CA) and Christian Banke (Danville, CA), one shot behind the leader Ed Hackett (Santa Clara, CA), a sophomore at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Velo and Banke fell out of contention early, both struggling to a 76 on the day. But before Sagoo and Hackett could make it a two-man tournament, they could only watch as Thomas Hutchison (San Jose, CA) took control of the tournament.

The UC-Davis freshman, who started the day at 2 under and two shots back, got off to a torrid start, making five birdies through eight holes to get to 7 under and three ahead of Sagoo, with Hackett an additional shot back.

Hutchison was still 7 under through 11, but from there all momentum stopped and he started losing shots. Bogeys at 12 and 13 preceded a double at 16, which left him 3 under where he ultimately finished.

Sagoo and Hackett took the opening. Birdies by Sagoo at 12 and 14 allowed him to catch Hackett at 5 under, and then came the deciding moment of the tournament--a three shot swing at the par-four 16th, with Sagoo making another birdie while Hackett suffered a double bogey 6. Now three up with two holes to go, Sagoo was suddenly comfortable, and a birdie at the final hole completed an inward nine of 32 and the four-shot final margin.

Hackett (68-73) and Hutchison (70-71) finished tied for second, with Stanford junior Brandon Wu (Danville, CA) fourth after two straight rounds of 71. Connor Blick (Danville, CA), the winner of two AmateurGolf.com events last year, was solo fifth after rounds of 70-74.

Matt Hedges (Ashland, OR), Hackett's teammate at CSU Monterey Bay and the winner of last year's inaugural McClure Cup, shot rounds of 70-77 to finish tied for 11th.
