Jack Thompson wins Australian Riversdale Cup by Five

ST. JOHN'S WOOD, Australia (March 11, 2018) - Jack Thompson didn't play his best golf on Sunday in the final round of the Australian Riversdale Cup but his 1-over 73 was more than enough to finish 14-under and as the five-stroke winner over 9-under William Heffernan.

After playing electric golf over the course of the first three days at Riversdale Golf Club (69-64-68) Thompson played a steady round of golf on the final day to pick up his first career Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com title.

Thompson began the round with 11 consecutive pars before double-bogeying the 12th for his his only double of the week. However, Thompson would quickly rebound rolling in a birdie on the 13th before parring to the house.

For the week Thompson's best golf came between No. 6-12 playing the stretch in 9-under.

Heffernan, the first round leader, tried to mount a charge and was within three shots after a birdie on No. 8 but two bogeys and no birdies followed the rest of the way as he signed for a 2-over 74.

Matias Sanchez was third at 8-under, Douglas Klein took fourth at 7-under while Nathan Barbieri and Zach Murray were 6-under in fifth.

WOMEN'S DIVISION

In the Women's Division Rebecca Kay finished 1-under and as a five shot winner as well. Playing Riversdale Golf Club as a par-74 layout Kay tallied scores of 72-74-74-75.

Caryn Khoo and Jessica Pickwick were 4-over in second while Alizza Hetherington and Alice Fan shared fourth at 5-over.

THIRD ROUND RECAP

With one round remaining the lead at the Australian Riversdale Cup belongs to Jack Thompson. Playing at Riversdale Golf Club Thompson is 15-under and four shots clear of day one leader William Heffernan.

After a first round 3-under 69 Thompson made a big move with a second round 8-under 64 on Friday. Thompson was even-par through five holes before birdieing five straight and six of the next eight. Overall he played the final 13-holes in 8-under.

Thompson, who shared third at the Avondale Amateur Medal earlier in the year, continued his strong play in the third round carding a 4-under 68 that included seven birdies and three bogeys.

For the week Thompson's best golf has come between No. 6-12 playing the stretch in 11-under.

Heffernan sits in the second spot at 11-under, the 9-under Douglas Klein is third while Zach Murray and Nathan Barbieri share fourth at 7-under.
