HOUSTON, TX (April 8, 2018) - Texans Craig Lurie / DeVaughn Robinson, from Houston, started with a two shot lead going into the fourth round and continued their steady and precise play to win the 51st Champions Cup Invitational carding a two-under par 69 on Sunday at Champions Golf Club. Their final 72-hole total of 269, 15 under par, put them on top of the 51 nationally ranked mid-amateur teams leaderboard.
Jack Burke, Jr., owner of Champions and 1956 Masters and 1956 PGA Championships commented, “Fabulous and steady playing by this year’s champions prevailed in the end. They were either on top or near the top of the leader from start to finish of the 4 rounds. They chipped and putted beautifully and only made one bogey for the entire week. That is truly amazing play on this most challenging championship venue, which will host the 2020 USGA Women’s Open Championship !”
Past champions, the Houston team of Gary & Eric Durbin, made run after run at the 2018 champions throughout the final round, but in the end, fell short after bogeying the tough par-3 16th hole, while Lurie/Robinson were able to record a par on the hole. Their aggressive play posted them a one-under par 70 for the day.
The Durbin/Durbin 272 total, 12 under par, captured the second-place position ahead of the 2015 Cup champions, Kyle Maxwell (Texas) and Derek Meinhart (IL) who shot the day’s best round of 5-under 66 for their third place 72-hole total of 273.
Chasing the top three finishers, the Texas team of Robert Gwin/ Scott Loving (275 – 9 under par) and the Louisiana team of Felipe Del Solar and Dustin Harris (276 -8 under par) stayed aggressive throughout the day and it paid dividends for their final score.
Average team score for day four was 70.64, compared to day three 74.79, day two 69.45, and day one of 70.03, over the par 71 championship layout Champions Golf Club Cypress Creek course with has hosted the Ryder Cup, US Open and multiple other national PGA and national championships over Champions 61-year history.
