BROWNS SUMMIT, NC (April 8, 2018) – The Wake Forest women’s golf team swept the titles Saturday during the final round of the Bryan National Collegiate at the Bryan Park Champions Course. The Demon Deacons won the team title and junior Jennifer Kupcho was the individual medalist at the event, which featured 10 Top-40 teams.
The title was the first for the Demon Deacons this season and first since the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in October of 2016. Kupcho’s win was her second victory of the season and the fifth win of her career, tying her for second in career victories in program history.
The Demon Deacons shot the low-round of the day with a final round 11-over 299 in rainy and windy conditions. After opening the tournament in ninth place after the first round, Wake Forest climbed to a tie for third after the second round and took the title with Saturday’s best round.
“I am so proud of the students and what they accomplished,” said head coach Dianne Dailey. “We got off to a really slow start in the first round. They made a great effort in the second round yesterday to come back. They learned from that first round and made some good adjustments. Today, they hung in there and played fantastic golf under some very challenging conditions.”
Jennifer Kupcho was the only player to finish the tournament under par, shooting 72-72-71 to finish at 1-under and post a 2-shot victory. It was her second win of the season, as she also won the season-opening Ocean Course Invitational at Kiawah Island in September. Her five career titles ties Brenda Corrie (1984-86) for second in school history, trailing only Stephanie Neill (1992-95) with 10 victories.
“It is terrific to see Jennifer play so well,” said Dailey. “She is such a strong player and loves to play in adverse conditions, and today was set up perfectly for her. She is such a fantastic player and I know there are even more victories in her future.”
Mai Dechathipat posted a final round 74 for the second-lowest round of the day for the Deacs, finishing the tournament at 13-over. Siyun Liu finished T-16th at 9-over after a final round 76. Monica Schumacher rounded out the scoring four for Wake Forest on Saturday with a 78. Emilia Migliaccio, who held the 36-hole lead, finished in seventh place at 5-over.
The victory was Wake Forest’s third in the 21-year history of the Bryan National Collegiate. The Demon Deacons also won the title in 2000 and 2011.
The Demon Deacons will return to action with the ACC Championship, held April 21-23 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro.
