Semifinals Set at Georgia Senior Match Play

SAVANNAH, GA (April 12, 2018) - With perfect playing conditions throughout the day, players delivered many exciting matches and the semifinal matchups are now set. The seventh edition of this event is taking place at The Savannah Golf Club, April 10-13.

Jack Hall of Savannah, the number one seed in the Senior division, will take on the twelve seeded Mark Nickerson of Roswell in the first semifinal match. Hall earned wins over Frank Paris of Savannah (4 and 3) in the round of 16, and Scotty Scott of Hoschton (1 up) in the quarterfinals. Nickerson defeated Doug Stiles of Athens (1 up) in the round of 16, and Michael O'Donnell of Atlanta (4 and 3) in the quarterfinals.

The second semifinal match will feature the number two seed, Bob Royak of Alpharetta, and three seeded, Danny Nelson, of Savannah. Royak earned his wins over Frank Remmes of Lilburn (5 and 4) in the round of 16, and outlasted defending champion, Wright Waddell of Columbus, (20 holes) in the quarterfinals. Nelson made his way through the bracket with victories over Jim Heard of Roswell (4 and 3) in the round of 16, and Mel Mendenhall of Marietta (5 and 4) in the quarterfinals.

In the Super Senior Division, the first semifinal match will feature top seeded Phil Pavoni of Macon and Al Small of Savannah. Pavoni defeated defending champion David Nell of Sharpsburg (3 and 1) in the round of 16, and Ernie Venet of Moultrie (6 and 4) in the quarterfinals. Small had wins over Randy Russell (20 holes) in the round of 16, and Joe Brogdon of Macon (4 and 2) in the quarterfinals.

The last semifinal match includes Bill Blalock of Atlanta and Brian Johnston of Peachtree Corners. Blalock is the number seven seed and had victories over Ronald Hunter of Jasper (5 and 4) in the round of 16, and Tony Center of Savannah (19 holes) in the quarterfinals. Johnston advanced with wins over Thomas Hiller of Fortson (3 and 2) in the round of 16, and Frank Costanzo of Savannah (4 and 3).

SECOND ROUND RECAP

Jack Hall of Savannah piled up seven birdies during his second round of stroke play qualifying to finish at 1-over-par 145 (77-68) and earn the top seed at the Georgia Senior Match Play Championship. The seventh edition of this event is taking place at The Savannah Golf Club, April 10-13.

Hall will face Frank Paris of Savannah in his opening match on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

In the Super Senior division for those ages 65 and above, Phil Pavoni of Macon earned medalist honors with his 3-over-par 147 in stroke play qualifying. He will take on defending champion, David Nell of Sharpsburg, in the opening round on Thursday at 9:34 a.m.

Another key match-up includes 2018 Georgia Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Wright Waddell of Columbus, taking on John Skeadas of Savannah at his home club.

FIRST ROUND RECAP

With the first round of stroke play qualifying in the books, it is Jack Kearney of Brealinn Golf Club sitting atop the leaderboard after posting an even-par 72 to lead the field at the Georgia Senior Match Play. The seventh edition of this event is taking place at The Savannah Golf Club, April 10-13.

Kearney racked up five birdies during his round including back-to-back birdies on holes 12 & 13. Following only one stroke behind at 1-over-par 73 is Scotty Scott and Bob Royak. Defending champion & 2018 Georgia Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Wright Waddell, sits at T4 after posting a 2-over-par 74.

In the Super Senior division for those ages 65 and above, Phil Pavoni of Brickyard Golf Club leads after posting a 1-under-par 71. Defending Super Senior champion, David Nell of White Oak Golf Club, finished round one at T11 6-over-par 78.

The format is match play preceded by 36 holes of stroke play qualifying. The low 16 players will advance to match play in both divisions.

ABOUT THE Georgia Senior Match Play

Open to male amateur golfers age 55 or older for the Senior Division and age 65 or older for the Super Senior Division as of the first day of the competition.

Field: 120 players with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes

Format: Match play preceded by 36 holes of stroke play qualifying; low 16 players advance to match play in both divisions if there are at least 32 entries in that division; otherwise, eight players.
