PHOENIX, AZ (April 29, 2018) - Jake Chanen of the Grand Canyon men's golf team successfully defended his Arizona Stroke Play Championship title, capturing the four-day 2018 championship just hours after competing in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
With the Lopes finishing runner-up on Wednesday at the WAC Championship, Chanen and several teammates took part in the Thursday – Sunday Arizona Stroke Play Championship at GCU Golf Course.
"I'm very proud of Jake going back-to-back, it is very special," said head coach Mark Mueller. "For him to grind out a victory coming right off the plane from conference is a credit to his toughness and shows what he is capable of doing when he really puts his mind to something. All the other guys played great as well, they need to use this as a spring board to have a great summer and come ready to go next fall."
Chanen, who won the event in 2017, started off with a first-round 67, finishing every round under par for a four-round 273 (-11) total. He won the event by one shot over Chad Wilcox.
TJ Nolan was the first-round leader after firing an opening 66. He finished in a tie for third-place (276, -8).
Max Sekulic also was in the top-10, finishing in seventh-place at 279. Colton Estevez and Trevor Lampson finished 12th (283).
Incoming freshman Nick Hedman finished 26th with rounds of 71-72-72-71.
