ST. LOUIS, MO (May 20, 2018) - The Normandie Amateur came down to a playoff to determine the winner after a drama filled weekend at Normandie Golf Club.
The players not only battled each other, but also mother nature as Saturday saw a 30 minute rain delay, and Sunday tee times were pushed back an hour due to wet conditions, but also saw a 35 minute rain delay before the start of the afternoon tee times.
But the weather did not stop the low scoring for some of the players as six people were able to jump out to the early lead, shooting even par or better. The group of six were led by Crimson Callahan shooting a 69 (-2) on Saturday. He was followed up by Conrad Maloney and Dustin Lagrand, both shooting 70 (-1) Saturday. Three people followed right on their heels shooting 71 (E) to end the first day of the amateur.
Sunday morning brought much of a familiar story for some of the golfers as many who got out on the course early struggled with the wetness of the course and were delayed an extra 35 minutes due to lightning in the area.
The six golfers who led the tournament battled it out in an action-packed afternoon that came down to the wire. Corey Choate, Buddy Allen and Michael Fowler, who all shot even par Saturday, teed off in the second to last group just three shots off the leader. Callahan, Maloney and LaGrand made up the final group trying to set the pace for the afternoon.
Allen got off to a hot start as he started to gain ground on Callahan and Maloney who both struggled to get any momentum going.
Choate began to make his move as he began to take advantage of the mistakes the leaders were making. Allen had the lead through 12 holes, but started to struggle on the 13h hole where he began a streak of bogies or higher for the next couple holes.
Callahan could not find his stroke for the day as he finished with a 152 (+10) for the tournament tied with Ellen Port, who was the only woman who competed in the tournament.
Maloney continued to step up in big situations as he finished with a 145 (+3) for the tournament and tied for first with Choate (pictured right).
The playoff began on the first hole as both golfers teed off and put their drives in the fairway. Choate and Maloney would both par the first playoff hole and head to the 18th tee for the second hole.
Choate would bogey the hole after missing about a 25 foot par putt. Maloney put his second shot about five feet away from the cup and would sink his par putt to win the tournament on the second playoff hole.
