Chanticleer National Senior: Pat Thompson wins in Playoff

GREENVILLE, SC (June 1, 2018) - In a final round duel, Pat Thompson edged out Eddie Hargett in a playoff to win the Chanticleer National Senior Invitational. After both players finished regulation 1-under extra holes were needed with Thompson eeking out the title.

Thompson closed with a final round round even-par 72 after posting rounds 72-71 on Wednesday and Thursday at the Greenville Country Club's Chanticleer Course. On Friday Thompson carded three birdies and three bogeys with his final circle coming on the 54th hole.

Hargett completed his week with a 1-under 71 overcoming an opening double-bogey to play the rest of the course in 3-under. Needing an electric finish Hargett birdied the last two.

Defending champion and 36-hole leader Todd Hendley ended up third at even-par, Allen Peake was fourth at 1-over while Walter Todd Sr. took fifth at 2-over.

In the Super Senior Division John Armstrong fired a final round 1-under 71 to finish even-par and tied with second round leader Paul Schlachter. Needing a playoff to decide things Armstrong won on the first extra hole.

Mike Bell was 4-over in third.

Taking the Legends Division crown was George Washburn III. Trailing at the start of the day, Washburn III pulled away to win by eight-strokes with. Washburn III combined rounds of 74-73-71 to finish 5-over. Second round leader John Blank was second and Rick Kline was third.

ROUND TWO RECAP

Defending champion Todd Hendley (Greer, SC) moved into first place in at the Chanticleer National Senior Invitational by shooting a 73, leaving him at three-under-par 141 after the second round. Lurking two shots back are first round leader Steve Harwell and Pat Thompson.

Last year Hendley ran away with the tournament, winning by seven shots. In the Super Senior Division, Paul Schlachter shot a second-straight even-par 72 for a two-day total of 144. He holds a one shot lead over first round leader John Armstrong.

In the Legends Division, John Blank shot a 75 today for a two-round total of 146 to remain in the lead by one shot over George Washburn III and two shots over Jim Wallis Jr.

ROUND ONE RECAP

Five birdies, no bogeys and the first round lead for Steve Harwell were the order of the day at the Chanticleer National Senior Invitational.

A native of Mooresville, NC, Harwell started quickly on Wednesday at the Greenville Country Club's Chanticleer Course with birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 and never slowed down rolling in additional birdies on the 11th, 13th and 16th holes to post a first round 5-under 67.

Harwell, still in search of his first career AmateurGolf.com Ranking win, is off to a strong start in ranking events this season having posted a tied for second at the Coleman Senior Invitational just over a month ago.

Heading into the second round defending champion Todd Hendley and Doug Stiles are just one back at 4-under while Johnny Elam is 1-under in fourth and Peter DeTemple, Scott Maybe, Pat Thompson share fifth at level-par.

SUPER SENIOR DIVISION

Pacing the field in the Super Senior Division is the 3-under John Armstrong. On Wednesday Armstrong bogeyed only once while also jarring four birdies. His lone dropped shot came on No. 1 with the birdies falling on the 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 10th holes.

Four players are sharing second following an even-par first round. The group includes Rick Doebler, Paul Schlachter, Charley Yandell and Bob Yow.

LEGENDS DIVISION

the lead in the Legends Division is being held by the even-par John Blank. However, the lead is slim with Jim Wallis Jr. only a shot back at 1-over in second while Rick Kline, Doug Tambara and Don Wood are locked in third place at 2-over. Blank moved in front with a two birdie, two bogey effort.

ABOUT THE Chanticleer Senior Invitational

The Chanticleer National Senior Invitational started in 2011 with the vision that it would provide a superbly conditioned, very challenging course on which to present a premier invitational tournament for elite senior and super senior golfers recognized for their playing accomplishments on a national and international scale. The limited field is determined from the pool of applicants with preference given to players' performance in national and international events as well as the current rankings. As an integral part of our vision, we provide extraordinary hospitality and great value to both our players and their significant others.

The Senior Division competition will be for players 55-64, as well as other older qualified players who may desire to play in this division. The Super Senior division will be for players 65-70, as well as other older qualified players who prefer to play at Chanticleer. There will be a cut after 36 holes. As an option for Legends, we will host a separate 70+ Legends division at our Riverside course provided we have a minimum number of 16 players. There will NOT be a cut.
