Scavo wraps up title in Women's Trans National debut
Kathleen Scavo (University of Oregon)
MARYSVILLE, CA (July 13, 2018) – It took a birdie on the final hole, but
Kathleen Scavo prevailed to win the Trans National Women’s Amateur. Scavo, a rising senior at Oregon, was playing roughly 100 miles from her home in Benicia, Calif., this week, making her title that much more fitting.
Scavo led after the first round at Peachtree Golf & Country Club courtesy of a 4-under 68. She reclaimed a share of the lead in Round 3 and played in the final group on Friday. Her 8-under 280 total left her one shot ahead of Stanford’s
Ziyi Wang.
Both players were 6 under entering the final round. Scavo put some distance between herself and Wang when she birdied the eighth hole and Wang bogeyed the ninth. Scavo, however, bogeyed the 15th to cut her lead to one shot. The 18th hole has seen no shortage of birdies this week, and each player added one on Friday. It left Scavo with a one-shot victory over Wang.
Scavo led the field with 17 birdies in 72 holes. This marks her Women’s Trans debut, but her end-of-week sentiments were that she wished she had found the tournament sooner.
“What I loved about this tournament was all the members were out there supporting us,” Scavo said. “It made it a memorable experience.”
Behind Wang, Texas player
Emilee Hoffman shot up the leaderboard with a final-round 5-under 67. It was her best round of the week by four shots and moved her to 6 under for the tournament. Hoffman made headlines earlier this summer with a decisive victory at the Women’s Western Amateur.
UCLA’s
Clare Amelia Legaspi tied Scavo’s Oregon teammate
Amy Matsuoka for fourth at 4 under.
