Bentley wins 2nd Alabama Women's Am title of her career
Cammie Bentley (Alabama Athletics)
MOUNTAIN BROOK, ALA. (July 13, 2018) –
Cammie Bentley has managed to put her name on the Alabama Women’s Amateur trophy for a second time – only this time, the last name is different.
When Bentley last won this event in 2013, she played under her maiden name of Cammie Gray. Alabama fans will recognize that name from the Crimson Tide women’s golf roster. She competed from 2013-17.
To win this second state amateur title,Bentley had to get past Mary Kate Horton in the final match at the Country Club of Birmingham. It was Horton’s first time playing in the final match at this event.
Bentley entered the match-play bracket as the No. 4 seed while Horton was the No. 10 seed. The final match required Bentley to play the most holes she had yet in match play. She won two of four matches this week on the 13th hole.
“It feels really good,” Bentley said of her title. “It was a hard fight out there, M.K. played really well out there, just really blessed to be able to come away with the victory.”
Against Horton, Bentley got to 3 up by the fourth hole. When rain moved through the area in the afternoon, it caused nearly a two-hour delay. When she returned to the course, Bentley struggled to find the rhythm she had had earlier in the day. She lost No. 14 to Horton, but made a big putt on No. 16 to tie the hole. Another tie on No. 17 sealed her 2-and-1 victory
“I felt like emotionally, I kept it together pretty well,” Bentley said. “I stayed present, didn’t live in the past or in the future too much. I also made some big putts whenever it counted, so that helped.”
