Michael Bernard def. Ray Nolan (4&3)

Incoming MTSU golfer Michael Bernard seemed comfortable from the get go on Wednesday afternoon at Council Fire Golf Club, handling his opponent Ray Nolan 4&3. Bernard would strike first and early with a winning birdie at No. 2, then winning the 3rd hole with a par. Nolan climbed back a bit winning with pars on Nos. 4 and 8 as his opponent proceeded to bogey on both holes. From then on, it was pedal down for Bernard, who took wins on four of their next seven holes, ending the match on the long par-4 15th.


Warren Cheney def. Jack Smith (20 holes)

Cheny Warren took down Jack Smith in the most entertaining match of the day. The former Tusculum College golfer was down at points, with his greatest deficit coming as he went 2-down on No.8, but each time was able to square the match, finally winning on the second playoff hole.


Benjamin Rebne def. Cayman Ratliff (3&1)

Rebne trailed early on in the match, but after winning on No. 6 with a birdie on the par five, would not lose another hole, beating his Ratliff 3-up. Rebne will play former junior golf buddy Oliver Simonsen in tomorrows semifinal match.


Oliver Simonsen def. Tim Jackson

Oliver Simonsen had a decisive win against top seeded Tim Jackson in his quarterfinal match. Simonsen played perfect golf, winning the 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 8th holes before Jackson conceded the match on the ninth green.


Matches will begin tomorrow morning, first with Simonsen vs. Rebne beginning at 8:15 AM CDT, followed by Cheney vs. Bernard at 8:30

ABOUT THE Tennessee Match Play

This match play event adopts the format used by the PGA Tour for the World Golf Championships Match Play tournament. Under this format, a field of 64 players will be divided into 16 groups of four players each. Each group will play a round-robin format with each competitor playing three matches within their group. A player will receive one point for a win, a half point for a tie, and each group’s winner will advance to the round of 16. Applications are open to amateurs who possess an active USGA/GHIN Handicap Index of 8.0 or less from a TGA member club or course.
