BATON ROUGE, LA (July 22, 2018) - Phillip Frazier and Jay Sanders of Baton Rouge fired a five-under par 67 on Sunday at the University Club in Baton Rouge to win the 35th Louisiana Golf Association Four-Ball Championship by one stroke.
Coupled with the low round of the Championship from Saturday (65), Frazier and Sanders finished at twelve-under par 132.
The teams of Brandon Aydlett of Metairie and John Humphries of Woodworth and Zachary Barrios and Jacob Bergeron of Slidell finished tied for second, just one shot back at eleven-under par.
Frazier and Sanders shot a 32 on the front 9 and a 35 on the back 9, and their final round 67 included seven birdies and two bogeys. Frazier and Sanders are both Mid-Amateur competitors, and they had to grind out a hard-fought win over younger competition. The Baton Rouge duo showcased what teamwork is all about, as Frazier contributed seven birdies and an eagle over the course of 36 holes, while Sanders provided six total birdies (they both birdied the par 5 3rd hole on Sunday). This is Frazier’s first LGA Championship, and Sanders, a recently reinstated amateur, has won a total of four LGA Championships dating back to 1987.
Rounding out the top 5 are: 4.) Brandt Garon of Jackson and Eric Hoffman of Denham Springs (134), T5.) Anthony Alfonso and Brian Meaux of Baton Rouge (138), T5.) Grady Brame of Hammond and Tommy Brennan of Covington (138), T5.) Dennis Brown of Gonzales and Landon Covington of Denham Springs (138).
The University Club is the home of LSU golf, and the course was in spectacular shape for the LGA Four-Ball Championship. The golf course was designed by David Toms and Jim Lipe and drew rave reviews from the state’s best amateur players this week. The University Club has hosted a number of LGA Championships since its opening in 1998, including the 2006 Mid-Amateur, 2007 Four-Ball and 2011 Senior Amateur Championships.
A total of 16 scores under par were shot on Sunday. The University Club course played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,900 yards on Sunday with a course and slope rating of 74.0/134. The Heat Index rose above 100 degrees in the afternoon. The wind gusted from the West 5-10 miles per hour throughout the day, making club selection difficult. The greens were phenomenal and rolling at an 11 on the stimpmeter.
