SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Aug. 12, 2018) – Karissa Guthrie will start her senior season at Northern Michigan with a state amateur title. The Pierre, S.D., native narrowly won the South Dakota Women’s Amateur at Elmwood Golf Club.
Guthrie was four shots off the lead entering the final round but posted her best score of the week on Sunday. Even though she started with two bogeys in the first five holes, Guthrie played the next 13 in 1 under par. She finished with a final-round 73.
Guthrie’s final round was the best of any competitor on Sunday. She overtook the players in front of her and managed to hold off a back-nine charge from runner-up Julie Jansa, who began the day tied with Guthrie at 7 over. Jansa struggled to a front-nine 41, but three birdies in her final six holes got her to 2-over 74 for the day, one shot behind Guthrie.
First- and second-round leader Katie Bartlett, a junior at South Dakota who is also from Pierre, ended with a 7-over 79 to fall out of contention and finished third. Maggie Murphy and Syney Bormann had final rounds of 80 and 81, respectively, to also fall down the leaderboard to a tie for fourth at 13 over.
