WEST END, NC (August 18, 2018) - Gene Elliott (W. Des Moines, IA) won the Golfweek Senior National Match Play on Saturday, defeating Randall Conn (Trophy Club, TX) in the final match 3 and 2 at the Dormie Club.

Elliott was in complete control throughout the tournament, never reaching the 17th hole in any of his matches. He started his week with a 5 and 4 win over David Ortego (Spring, TX), then on Thursday, he took out last year's runner-up Scott Smith (Houston, TX) 5 and 3, and followed it up with a 3 and 2 win over 2017 Golfweek Senior champion Michael Wharton-Palmer (Texarkana, AR) to reach the final.

With the win, Elliott extends his lead in the AmateurGolf.com Senior Player-of-the-Year points race. Elliott came into the tournament #1 on the strength of wins at the Jones Cup Invitational and the George C. Thomas Senior. Most recently, he traveled to the UK where he qualified for the British Senior Open at St. Andrews and came within one shot of making the halfway cut.

The defending champion and current #2 senior Jack Hall (Savannah, GA) suffered an upset defeat in the round of 16, falling to Mark Nickerson (Roswell, GA) 3 and 1.

Current #3 Allen Peake (Macon, GA) made it to the semifinals before being eliminated by Conn 1 up. He then lost the consolation match to Wharton-Palmer, 4 and 3.

In the Super Senior Division, Paul Schlachter (Bridgeville, PA), who recently qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur, beat Charlie Horn (Marana, AZ) 3 and 2.

In the Legends Division, Danna Sutton (Metairie, LA) beat Gary Shimmin (Okatie, SC) 2 and 1.
