SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2018) – There were plenty of birdies Saturday at the top of the San Jose City Championship leaderboard. Shane Muldowney and Kevin Velo had six birdies and a bogey apiece to reach 5-under 66 at Santa Theresa Golf Club. It was good for a share of the first-round lead.
Muldowney was 3 under in his last four holes and 4 under on his back nine. Velo, meanwhile, opened with three birdies in his first six holes. Either way, it was an impressive day for the co-leaders.
Muldowney, of Carlsbad, Calif., will be a sophomore at UC Davis this fall. Velo, meanwhile, will be a senior at San Jose State. The Danville, Calif., native led the Trojans in scoring last season.
Joseph Yagmourian is third after an opening 4-under 67. Yagmourian was 6 under through 15 holes, but bogeyed Nos. 16 and 18 coming in to fall back down the leaderboard.
Jason Chen, Daniel Kim and Kevin Noto share fourth at 3 under.
