SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 19, 2018) – It was a tight leaderboard at the San Jose City Championship, but
Kevin Velo pulled away in the second round to win the title. Velo was 9 under for 36 holes at Santa Theresa Golf Club, and put a four-shot cushion between himself and the next-best player.
Velo, a senior at San Jose State, started the day tied for the lead with
Shane Muldowney, a UC Davis sophomore. When Velo went 3 under on the front nine and Muldowney went 1 over, Velo put his foot on the gas.
Ultimately, Velo went 1 under on the back for a 4-under 69 to close the tournament. He had opened with 5-under 67.
Muldowney, with even-par 71, ended up in a tie for second with
Finigan Tilly, a Cal junior. Tilly birdied his opening three holes on Sunday, but a double-bogey on the par-5 17th cost him.
Daniel Kim was fourth at 4 under and Joseph Yagmourian rounded out the top 5 at 3 under.
