PINEHURST, N.C. (Aug. 22, 2018) –
Eddie Hargett held on to his second-round lead at the Senior North & South and turned it into a four-shot victory Wednesday at Pinehurst No. 2. Hargett had a final-round, 2-under 74 on a day when scores rose across the board.
Hargett only had three birdies on No. 2, a course that has hosted nine USGA events since 1962, including three U.S. Opens. He managed an even-par 36 on the front, but had 38 on the back to finish with 74. Hargett was 5 under for the week, and ended up four ahead of runners-up Joe Shaktman and
Johnny Elam.
Already this year, Hargett has finished second at the Chanticleer Senior and T-3 at the Gasparilla Senior. This is his first Senior North & South title.
Shaktman and Elam both had a final-round 71, which was the best score of the day. Shaktman missed finishing in solo second thanks to a double bogey on No. 18.
Scott Mayne and
Walter Todd shared fourth place with a 1-over total. Defending champion Todd Hendley tied for seventh with
John Ambridge and
John Fritz.
In the super senior division,
Jerry Ishee II closed with 76 at Pinehurst No. 6, but still managed to hang on for a one-shot victory over Bruce Scamehorn. Ishee had at least a share of the lead for each of the first two rounds.
