COHASSET, Mass. (Oct. 8, 2018) –
Herbie Aikens earned his second Southeastern Amateur title Sunday by a wide margin of victory. Aikens, who plays out of Old Sandwich Club in Plymouth, Mass., was 10 shots ahead of the next-closest player.
Aikens last won this title in 2016, when the tournament was shortened because of weather. This week, Aikens had rounds of 69-69-70 to finish at 5-under 208. He was the only player under par for all three rounds.
John Hadges of Thorny Lea Golf Club was second at 5 over.
The tournament is played at three courses in eastern Massachusetts: Easton Country Club, South Shore Country Club and Cohasset Golf Club.
Aikens’ amateur-golf highlights include a second place at the 2014 Stocker Cup (he tied for first but lost in a playoff). He also won the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur and the Public Links Championship in 2014.
Behind Hadges,
Ryan Pelletier finished third at 6 over. Pelletier, a reinstated amateur who plays out of Pawtucket Country Club, was T-6 at the Francis Ouimet Memorial earlier this summer. He partnered with brother Kyle to win the Gilholm Cup last week.
In the senior division, John Hadges won the title with a 5-over 218 total. Steve Tasho was runner-up at 10 over. Both players belong to Thorny Lea Golf Club, which also claims 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Matt Parziale and 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Shannon Johnson.
Jon Fasick won the super senior title at 11 over.
