AUSTIN, Texas (Oct. 21, 2018) – Texas took first in its own backyard on Sunday, winning the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite by seven shots. The Longhorns sealed it with a final-round 9-under 279 at the University of Texas Golf Club, the best score of any team in the field all week.
Texas finished 54 holes at 10 under. That was seven shots better than Kent State, who finished second at 3 under. Baylor was much farther back in third, at 11 over, and Florida was fourth at 16 over.
All five Longhorns in the starting lineup posted a score of even par or better in the final round. Freshman Hailee Cooper led the charge with a 4-under 68. That was enough to also put Cooper on top of the individual leaderboard. She was 9 under for 54 holes after opening rounds of 72-67.
"It's so awesome, winning a home tournament is huge,” Cooper said of her first college title. “I've heard winning other tournaments is great, but this one is so exciting. My family and friends are here, so it's really exciting. I was hoping to maybe one day win a collegiate tournament, but it's my freshman year and this is a home tournament, so this is indescribable and so much fun."
Teammate Kaitlyn Papp finished right behind her in second. Papp was 5 under after rounds of 71-70-70. Texas also counted a T-4 performance from Agathe Laisne, who was 2 under for the tournament.
The win is the first for Texas this season, and they had to hold off a seasoned Kent State to get it. The Golden Flashes began their season with back-to-back victories. They came to Austin off a runner-up finish at the Illini Women’s Invitational. The Betsey Rawls was Kent State’s final start of the fall season.
