MANSFIELD, Texas (Nov. 6, 2018) – After two days at Walnut Creek Country Club playing a Chapman-style format, Dallas residents Melissa Loh and Nancy Beck won the Women’s Texas Pinehurst by a one-shot margin. The champions had back-to-back rounds of 1-over 72 in the event.
The event’s Chapman format means that among the two-woman teams, each player hits a drive on every hole and then plays her partner’s ball for the second shot. From there, the partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play the ball alternately to complete the hole.
Loh and Beck started hot, logging birdies on their two opening holes on Monday. They bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 to give up the first-round lead to Joanna Davis and Marian Barker, who won this event a year ago.
With another round of 72, Loh and Beck leap-frogged the defending champions and never looked back. Even though Jan Rapp and Camry Tardy had an even-par 71 in the second round, it wasn’t enough to unseat Loh and Beck.
Rapp of Dallas and Tardy of Arlington won a scorecard playoff for second. Barker and Davis matched their 3-under total.
In the second flight, Sherri Buster of Westlake and Kimberly Little of Houston held onto their first-round lead with a final-round 71 to take first place. They were 12 shots ahead of the next-best team.
Olivia Campbell of Franklin and Becky Gustamante of Montgomery also held onto their lead in the third flight, winning by five with a 19-over total.
Sun Scannell of Spring and Paweena Bennett of Tomball won the fourth flight with 27-over 169. In the fifth flight Julie Owens and Myndee Billingsley, both from Mansfield, won on their home course with the same number.
