- had both sides of the ball covered
ROCKLAND, Maine (August 18, 2007) -- In an unprecedented break with tradition,
Tournament Chairman Pete Wlodkowski brought the Goodfellas "Down Maine" for
their 16th annual event on August 17 and 18. The host course, Samoset Resort
On The Ocean, didn't disappoint.
After a near rainout on Saturday morning, the second round commenced at 1:30pm.
The now-traditional GFO "cut" and emergency nine were eliminated, and
the event was played at 36 holes.
That was plenty of time to make up three shots, and then some, for partners Toby
Daley and John Wilson, Daley swinging from the left side of the ball and Wilson
from the right.
Wilson, of Boston, and Daley, of Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.
took the title, thanks to a remarkable
best ball of 6-under 64 in blustery Saturday afternoon conditions. At the Saturday
tournament dinner, Wilson was quick to give credit to his partner's stellar play.
"Toby was awesome," said Wilson. "His game has really come a long way."
Indeed, Daley blew right past the title of "most improved player" and onto the
GFO trophy with four natural birdies. He got the team off to a fast start with
a birdie for net eagle on the par 4 second hole, then added another at the 6th,
an uphill par 4 that shares a green with the par 3 third at the highest point
on the oceanside front nine.
On the 190 yard 13th, a water-guarded three shotter that derailed several teams,
Daley made another birdie that quickly erased the two strokes the team lost with
a net double-bogey at the 12th.
The team touched 7-under after Daley's final birdie at the 17th, but gave one
back at the par 4 eighteenth, the toughest hole on the course. From the back
tees, the hole plays 478 yards, with the wet fairway offering zero bounce and
wind in the face forcing many players to lay up in front of the hazard that guards
the green.
It was Daley's 7-for-5 that kept the team alive.
"I hooked my tee shot into the 1st fairway," said Daley. "From there it was back
to the fairway, over the green onto the driving range, and finally into the hole
for seven."
Wilson was far from sitting in the cart and watching. He contributed four shots
on the front nine by saving Daley at Nos. 7 and 8. It all netted out to an incredible
score given the wet and windy conditions. The team's 71-65-135 was three strokes
clear of Pete "The Dave" Davison and Brian Currie, who finished in second place
at 138.
Davison and Currie also had a strong second day performance, posting a 5-under
65 on solid play from Davison (who desperately wants to shed the title of "best
player to have never won a GFO")
and more than enough contributions from Currie.
Relaxed by the piano performance he put on for the 'fellas (and some hotel
guests) in the dining room during the rain delay, Currie made seven pars and
a birdie (at No. 3) during the round.
Davison was quick to grab the scorecards to figure out what a team of Currie
and Daley would have posted had they been teamed together. The number? 59.
Defending co-champ Kevin D'Arcy of Stowe, Vermont and
partner Will Tracy (who grew up in Springfield, Vt. and attended UVM) fired
a 2-under 68 to take the round one lead. They were the only players under par
on day one, as players struggled with the tricky Samoset layout. After closing
with a solid 71, they finished alone in third at 139.
Newcomer Dave "Linxter" Lincoln, of Germantown, TN, hit it 7', 4" to grab closest
to the pin on No. 11, while Dave "Bucky" MacCallum got long drive by flying his
driver by the Pete "The Wad" Wlodkowski 3-wood shot that was holding up for long
drive on the 18th for a good part of the day.
"Kid, it was way by you kid - I didn't even think that long drive marker was
ours," said MacCallum.

ABOUT THE
GFO
Brian O'Sullivan, Middlebury class-of-1984, conceived of an annual golf outing with a group of friends shortly after graduation. The first tournament had just 8 players. Harking back to the scene in the classic movie where the meaning of "Goodfella" is explained (minus the violence and mafia overtones) O'Sullivan decided on the name "Goodfellas," or GFO for short, and the name has stuck. The tournament field originally consisted of Middlebury Graduates but has since been expanded to include 40 or more friends, family, and others who are willing to make the sacrifice of being away from their wives and families for just one weekend each summer.
