LA QUINTA, Calif. (January 19, 2019) - Charlie Reiter, the long-hitting USC freshman playing in his hometown PGA Tour event, set the course record at the famed PGA West Stadium Course.

Reiter, playing in front of family and friends from nearby Palm Desert, started his round with four birdies in his first five holes. After turning in 4-under 32, he made three more birdies and an eagle to come home in 31 for a 9-under 63.

It is believed to be the second-lowest score in PGA Tour history by an amateur, trailing only Patrick Cantlay's stellar 60 at the Travelers Championship in 2011.

How competitive is it on the PGA Tour? Reiter was 8 under and still missed the cut by a shot, after digging a hole in his first round with a 75 at La Quinta Country Club, followed by a 70 at the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West.

"I figured I would just have to go out and make as many birdies as I could and we'll see what happens at the end," said Reiter. "I was just trying to make one birdie on every hole."

Reiter now goes back to USC, where the college season starts in three weeks at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
