Andrea Lee leads Stanford to Northrop Grumman win

The rain and win persisted in Palos Verdes, Calif., on Tuesday, but so did Andrea Lee. The Stanford junior closed the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge with a final-round 73, good enough for a one-shot win individually. Lee led her team to victory, too.

Lee’s individual win was made even sweeter by the fact that the tournament was practically in her backyard. Lee grew up in Hermosa Beach, Fla. This is the seventh title she has won in two and a half years at Stanford.

"We all loved seeing Andrea take the title in her backyard, a memory that will stick with her for a lifetime," Stanford head coach Anne Walker said.

Lee won three times as a freshman and three times as a sophomore. Her seven program victories are one shy of the program record of eight set by Mhairi McKay in 1994-97.

As for the team, Stanford logged its second win of the season, but Walker thought the scorecard didn’t quite do the week justice.

"This win ranks top-five all-time for the program," she said. "The field was loaded and the conditions were incredibly difficult. The team stayed patient, hit awesome shots and saved incredible pars."

Stanford made its move in the second round, using the only under-par round of the day to climb into the lead. The Cardinal held that position on Tuesday, and a 9-over 293 was just enough to keep the team (at 15 over) ahead of first-round leader UCLA. The Bruins finished second at 17 over.

Top-ranked USC moved up one position into third, and Texas was fourth.
