Texas completes Allstate Sugar Bowl win in tough conditions

Texas pulled off arguably its biggest victory of the season on Tuesday in an Allstate Sugar Bowl field that featured eight of the 20 teams in the nation. The Longhorns set the pace at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans and led after each round. It’s the second Texas victory of the season after the team won its own Betsy Rawls Invitational to end the fall.
Conditions were bleak and scores relatively high in the final round, and Texas’ final-round 12-over 300 was the third-best score of the day. Runner-up Duke had an 8-over 296 for the best round, and while the Blue Devils climbed a spot up the leaderboard, they still came up two shots short of a win.
Texas, No. 3 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, put three players in the top 15, but no single player did all the work. Senior Maddie Luitwieler had the best finish with a T-8 while Agathe Laisne and Hailee Copper both tied for 11th.
"It was a terrific team effort this week in tough conditions,” head coach Ryan Murphy said. “Everyone contributed and we needed every bit of it. It was a great win against a great field. I'm proud of this group."
Behind Duke, USC slid to 23 over total with a 19-over 307 in the final round. Florida, the defending champion, tied for fourth with South Carolina another the shot back. The Gators claimed the individual champion for the second consecutive year as Addie Baggarly finished at even par. Houston’s Leonie Harm shared that title.
