Arizona State out to early lead at Cabo Collegiate

Sometimes it just takes a win to open the door. That seems to be the story for Arizona State, a team that won its first season title last month at the John Burns Collegiate and opened the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Sunday with a field-best 15-under 269.
Before winning the John Burns, played in Hawaii, the Sun Devils had claimed four runner-up finishes on the season. Then again, another way to frame that is that they haven’t finished outside the top 5 yet this season.
Three Arizona State players landed inside the top 3 individually after one round at Querencia Country Club in Los Cabos, Mexico. Blake Wagoner and Chun An Yu are tied for the lead at 5-under 66. Yu went bogey-free while Wagoner made his only bogey at the par-4 fifth. Mason Anderson is bogeyed his final hole for a 4-under 67.
The Sun Devils lead Oklahoma State by eight shots. The Cowboys are without Viktor Hovland, reigning U.S. Amateur champion and college golf’s top player, as he prepares to the play the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational next week. Still, sophomore Matthew Wolff led the team in scoring with a 67 that left him tied for third. Teammates Austin Eckroat and Hayden Wood had rounds of 69 that left them tied for eighth.
Baylor is third at 6 under, one shot behind Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss is fourth three shots behind that.
