As the defending champion fell down the leaderboard on Sunday, a new player got a chance to claim the Texas South Mid-Amateur title. Devin Young of Austin won by two shots after a stellar final round at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin. Kurtis Lilley of Cypress earned Mid-Master honors.
Young, who played in the second-to-last group of the day, carded a final-round score of 3-under 69 to claim the title. His final-round score par got him back to even-par 216 for the tournament. On the day, Young carded seven birdies, two bogeys and what he thought would be a costly big number on the par-4 18th. His double-bogey ended up inconsequential, however, as he overcame a four-shot deficit to win the tournament by two strokes.
Kevin Liberto of Cypress finished in second behind Young after a 1-under 71 in the final round. Liberto finished with a tournament total of 2-over 218.
Kurtis Lilley, also of Cypress, finished in solo third, with a tournament total of 4-over 220. Lilley’s third-place finish earned him Mid-Master honors, which are awarded to the low player in the field 40 years of age or older.
Will Griffin of Austin, and Broc Haymon of Pearland finished in a tie for fourth with a tournament total of 5-over 221. Haymon entered the week as the two-time defending champion.
