Slovenia’s Pia Babnik darling logged a wire-to-wire finish at the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship, and even though she finished seven shots ahead of the field, the final day was hardly a walk in the park.
Babnik had a three-shot lead entering the final round at the Royal Troon Old Course, and even though she picked up four shots in the first four holes, she had to work for it.
“Today it was a bit tougher out there compared to the other days,” she told Scottish Golfer at the end of the day. “The wind was tricky but when I made my eagle, I just tried to keep making good shots. I didn’t make any mistakes and even though I knew I could win, I just wanted to focus on my own game.”
Ultimately, Babnik finished the week at 15 under with rounds of 66-69-66. Frenchwoman Charlotte Bunel was 8 under in second and Englishwoman Sharna Dutrieux was third another shot behind that.
Babnik earned coveted Junior Solheim Cup points with the win, and hopes it helps her get back to Scotland as a part of that team later this year.
“It would mean a lot to be part of the team, I came here to get qualification points for the PING Junior Solheim Cup and yeah, I won. For me, it would be a very special day to be part of the European team.”
