Jonathan Romano of Vancouver, Wash., and Gretchen Johnson of Portland, Ore., won their respective divisions at the 31st Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha, Ore.
Romano (70-67-137) was 5 under in Sunday’s final round, which included six birdies – five coming on the final nine holes. He was the clubhouse leader with a 2-under 70 on Saturday, a round buoyed by a cluster of birdies on the back nine.
Romano fended off a charge from Michael Johansen, also of Vancouver, Wash., who finished two strokes back in second place after carding the low round of the tournament with his final-round 65. Chris Dukeminier or Portland, Ore., and Pat O’Donnell of Happy Valley, Ore., ended in a tie for third at 2 under.
Johnson (69-68-137) ran away with the women’s division title, finishing at 7 under for the tournament. In Saturday’s opening round, she tallied six birdies – three consecutive coming on Nos. 3-6 – to lead all scorers at 3 under.
Johnson also enjoyed the front nine on Sunday, with a birdie on No. 3 and an eagle on No. 5, a 231-yard par 4. She recorded three additional birdies on the back nine to finish 4 under for the round. Johnson was the only player in the field on the women’s side to shoot under par during both rounds of play.
Portland’s Lara Tennant, the reigning U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur champion, finished in second place at even par, while Amanda Jacobs, also of Portland, took third at 3 over. Tennant (69-75-144), a four-time Oregon Mid-Amateur champion, was tied for the lead after the first round when she posted a 3-under 69, highlighted by an eagle and two birdies.
