Virginia Tech's Burgess runs away with second Fox Puss title

For Virginia Tech, the college season is over. Sophomore Connor Burgess, however, is just getting started. The Lynchburg, Va., native ran away with the Fox Puss Amateur title on Sunday at Boonsboro Golf Club in his hometown. This is the second Fox Puss title for Burgess, who also won in 2016.

Burgess, the leading scorer at Virginia Tech, had rounds of 66-65-68 for a 14 under total that left him six shots ahead of runner-up Justin Young of Roanoke, Va. Burgess had a four-shot lead entering the day, but with four birdies in his first 16 holes, he easily extended that. Remarkably, he had only one bogey in each round.

Burgess competed in all 11 events for the Hokies this season. He was ninth at the ACC Championship. Last summer, Burgess was a semifinalist at the Virginia State Amateur.

As for runner-up Young, the 2017 Virginia Mid-Amateur winner, opening rounds of 68-67 left him within striking distance of Burgess but a final-round 70 didn’t include enough firepower for Young to catch him.

Isaac Simmons and Scott Shingler tied for third at 5 under. Jimmy Delp of Alexandria, Va., was solo fifth at 3 under.

Boonsboro Golf Club will also host the inaugural Donna Andrews Invitational next month.

ABOUT THE Fox Puss Invitational

54 hole stroke play format tournament was given the name “FOX PUSS” to honor two of Boonsboro’s members that for many years had devoted their talents and time to amateur golf in the State of Virginia and the Lynchburg area, Mr. H. M. “Fox” Blankinship and Mr. Charles “Puss” Hancock. Both of these gentlemen were former Presidents of the Virginia State Golf Association. This is the ruling body for Amateur golf within the State of Virginia. Additionally, Mr. Hancock was a long term President of Boonsboro Country Club.

The first tournament was held late in 1971 and has continued each year. While we have had to cancel the tournament three times over the years, we have been able to retain a high level of competition for the contestants. Our Champions and contestants have been State Amateur Champions; United States Amateur Champion; British Amateur Champion; and Walker Cup Members.
