Logan Lowe (Grass Valley, Calif.) shot a final-round 70 to pull away from the field and win the Memorial Amateur Championship by five shots at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif.
Lowe just completed his senior season at George Washington and came into the tournament in good form, having won the Atlantic-10 Conference Championship last month. He finished the Memorial Am as the only player with three under-par rounds on a course that played much tougher than in years past. Only three of over 100 players who started the tournament finished the tournament in red figures, led by Lowe at 6-under 210.
SMU junior Daniel Connolly (San Francisco, Calif.) entered the final round one shot behind Lowe, but shot a 74 to fall into a second place tie at 1-under 215. Notre Dame junior Hunter Ostrom (Eagle, Idaho), who shared the lead after the first round, closed with a 71 to finish join runner-up with Connolly.
Joshua Diaz (70) and Christian Banke (72) tied for fourth at even par, while Matthew Sutherland was sixth at 1-over 217.
Canadian Olivier Menard, who played in the final group and started the day two shots out of Lowe's lead, shot a 76 to fall into a four-way tie for seventh.
Ancil Hoffman Golf Course defended par well, allowing only four rounds in the 60s (all in the second round) after giving up winning scores of double digits under par in each of the last two years.
The Memorial Amateur Championship seeks to honor Memorial Day and its cherished place as a national holiday. The sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces and by those in public service should never be understated or forgotten. To those that have paid the ultimate price in defense of this great nation, we honor and cherish their memories.
DAY TWO RECAP
Logan Lowe (Grass Valley, Calif.) shot a 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Memorial Amateur Championship at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif.
Lowe, who has just finished his senior season at George Washington University, sits at 4-under 140 to lead SMU junior Daniel Connolly (San Francisco, Calif.) by one shot. Connolly also shot 69 to reach three under par.
Lowe is the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference champion, and is coming off of a successful senior season that included two wins and six top-10 finishes. He also won the Bash at the Beach in March.
Joining Lowe and Connolly in the final threesome on Memorial Day Monday will be Olivier Menard (Quebec, Canada), who had the low round of the day with a 4-under 68. They are the only three players under par through two rounds.
Ancil Hoffman continued to test the field in the second round. Though it gave up its first four sub-70 rounds of the championship, the 4-under leading total falls far short of winning tallies of previous years.
Four players, including first-round co-leader Hunter Ostrom, are at even par, four shots back of the lead. Another four are at 1 over and four others are at 2 over, so with a hot final round there are still plenty of players with a chance heading into the final round.
DAY ONE RECAP
It's anyone's tournament after one round of the Memorial Amateur, as Ancil Hoffman Golf Course defended itself well and created a crowded leaderboard with two rounds still to play.
The winning score the last two years has been double-digits under par, but on Saturday none of the 100 scores posted were in the 60s. Three players share the lead after rounds of 2-under 70: Josh McCollum, a senior at Chico State; Hunter Ostrom, a junior at Notre Dame; and mid-amateur John Skelton of Oceanside, Calif.
They have plenty of company. Four players sit just one shot behind the lead at 1 under, and another five are two shots back at even par. In all, a whopping 38 players are within five shots of the lead.
Scoring should be no easier in Sunday's second round, as the forecast call for morning showers followed by winds gusting over 30 miles per hour in the afternoon.
There will be a new champion this year, as the 2018 winner Danny Hopoi has turned professional.
