Local knowledge fuels Carr to midway Southeastern Amateur lead

Benjamin Carr (Columbus, Ga.) shot a 3-under 67 to take a one-shot lead after 36 holes of the 90th Southeastern Amateur at the Country Club of Columbus.

A rising sophomore at Georgia Southern, Carr is a member of the host course and rode his local knowledge to a third place finish a year ago when he was a high school senior. On Thursday, he started hot with birdies at two, three and four, and from there he traded a couple of birdies with a couple of bogeys to get into the clubhouse at 8-under 132.

One shot back is 37-year-old Rusty Mosley (Vidalia, Ga.), who shot a second-round 68. Mosley is a former Florida State player who took 14 years away from competitive golf before returning and making a run to the quarterfinals of last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur in Charlotte, N.C.

Jordan Doull, the first-round leader who plays at Columbus State University by way of Perth, Australia, tread water on Thursday, shooting an even-par 70 that leaves him alone in third at 6-under 134. Doull dropped three shots on the two front-nine par threes, but picked up two birdies coming in to steady himself.

James Clark, III (Columbus, Ga.), a recent Georgia Tech graduate, and rising University of South Carolina senior Caleb Proveaux (Lexington, S.C.), both veterans of this tournament, sit tied for fourth at 5 under.

The low score in the second round was 5-under 65, shot by Spencer Cross of the University of Tennessee and Auburn University commit Hal Dove. Both players sit tied for sixth at four under.

In all 18 of the 90 players in the field are under par through two rounds.

After tomorrow's third round, the low 60 players and ties will advance to the final round on Saturday.

The Southeastern Amateur is a top-level amateur golf tournament with a rich history dating back to 1922 - when the tournament was created by Fred Haskins. Each year, the Southeastern Amateur has the great honor of hosting many of the nation's top amateur golfers, from Division I NCAA National Champions to the nation's top Mid- Amateurs.

Field is limited to 90 players. The format is 54 holes of stroke play with no cut. Open qualifier held the day before the tournament.
