Hogarth wins ninth Los Angeles City title in a comeback

Tim Hogarth had some work to do entering the fourth and final round of the Los Angeles City Championship on Sunday. As professional golf’s best battled for a U.S. Open title farther north in the state, Los Angeles’ best battled for the city title.
Hogarth entered the day five shots off the pace set by defending champion Damon Krause, but by the end of the day had a one-shot advantage. This amounts to Hogarth’s ninth Los Angeles City title.
Hogarth, the 1996 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, spent the whole week chasing Krause. Krause opened with a 64 to Hogarth’s 66 at Griffith Park Golf Course, then increased his lead from two shots to five shots with a second-round 70 while Hogarth had 73. The two had matching rounds of 1-under 71 in the third round.
When Hogarth posted a final-round 67, it allowed him to close the gap on Krause, who had 73.
Hogarth is a fixture in California golf lore, having won several SCGA titles as well as his nine Los Angeles City Championship crowns. He qualified for last year’s U.S. Senior Open but missed the cut, and has qualified for that event again this year.
