Not one bogey.

South Africa’s Tyran Snyders did not have one bogey on Pinehurst No. 8 on Wednesday en route to a sparkling 4-under 68 and a three-shot victory over the Philippines’ Jolo Timothy Magcalayo in the 41st Boys’ Junior North & South Championship.

“I haven’t won any national tournaments at home, but to come to America for the first time and contend, then keep it together and come up with the win is pretty special,” Snyders said.

Snyders led Magcalayo by two shots coming into the final round, and needed an under-par round to have a chance at the win. In the end, the top six players each shot under par on Wednesday.

“I played with (Magcalayo) in the second round on No. 2, and I knew he was a really good and steady player,” Snyders said. “Then, playing with him again today, I knew I’d have to play really good golf to win. He only made one bogey all day, and I knew I had to do pretty much the same, and I did – no bogeys.”

Magcalayo shot 69 to finish with a three-day total of 6-under 208, three shots back of Snyders’ 205. Snyders opened the championship with a 67 on No. 8 on Monday. Garrett Risner, of nearby Holly Springs, also shot 68 to come in third.

With the victory, Snyders’ name will be emblazoned in bronze on the Perpetual Wall in the Heritage Hall of Pinehurst’s main clubhouse. He will also earn a berth into the Men’s North & South Amateur.

“No. 2 has hosted a Ryder Cup and U.S. Opens, and it was pretty intimidating,” Snyders said of the second round. “But at the same time, I was quite excited to play, especially with these circumstances.”
