Carpenter stays under par for Metropolitan Amateur win
Brad Carpenter (MAGA photo)
Brad Carpenter ended the week at Aberdeen Golf Club in St. Louis as the only golfer with rounds under par for all three days of the Metropolitan Amateur. At 7 under (70-66-70-206), Carpenter ended up with the title.
Carpenter got off to a hot start in Saturday’s final round, which is a good thing because the front nine is the side you must attack at Aberdeen. He made birdie on three of his first five holes and pushed his lead to four shots. There was no turning back.
Curtis Brokenbrow finished three shots behind Carpenter in second. Brokenbrow, who hails from Manchester, England, recently graduated from Missouri Baptist University. Brokenbrow would get to within two shots of Carpenter late in the final round, however a bogey on the par-5 17th left him at 4 under. Brokenbrow had rounds of 72-68-69.
The 2009 champion, Skip Berkmeyer, ended his 27th consecutive Amateur Championship with a solo third-place finish. Berkmeyer carded rounds of 73-68-69, including both the 68 and 69 rounds at bogey free golf. It was a nice tune-up for Berkmeyer, who has qualified for the U.S. Amateur, to be played in another week at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort.
Ryan Eckelkamp, who led after the first round, finished the championship tied for fourth with Chris Kovach and Crimson Callahan. All three men were 2 under
