Sean Knapp defended his title at the Western Pennsylvania Senior Amateur on Tuesday, and effectively set himself apart at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa. At the end of two rounds, Knapp had the only score in red numbers. His 4-under total was nine shots better than the next-best player.
Knapp was consistent with back-to-back scores of 2-under 70. He had nothing worse than a bogey over the two days, and also had 10 birdies. Two of those came at Nos. 1 and 2 in the first round, which set the tone for what was to come from Knapp, one of Western Pennsylvania’s most decorated players.
This marks the second time that Knapp, 57, has won the WPGA Senior, but it joins a long list of other Pennsylvania golf titles on Knapp’s resume. He has won the Western Pennsylvania Amateur eight times over a span of 30 years. His first title was in 1988, and Knapp won his latest title last year. He is also a nine-time Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur champion and perhaps most prestigiously, won the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2017 in his first year of eligibility.
Behind Knapp, Bob Crnjarich and Michael Capotis tied for second at 5 over.
Don Erickson won the super senior title at 2 under after rounds of 72-70. Bob Paris was next with a 1-under total.
